A global IoT SIM card has a harder job: connect thousands of unattended devices, across borders, for years — where nobody notices a failure until the data is already missing.
That difference is why picking an IoT SIM provider is an infrastructure decision, not a phone-plan decision.
What Makes an IoT SIM Different
Three things separate a real IoT SIM from a consumer SIM with a data plan.
Multi-network access. A consumer SIM camps on one home network. A global IoT SIM roams across many networks per country, so a device in a delivery van or a rural pump station attaches to whichever network is strongest — and fails over when that network degrades. Through the GSMA IoT SAFE framework, the SIM acts as a secure element — a small crypto-safe inside the device that anchors TLS sessions to the cloud. IoT data plans fail in the details: per-country rate cards that make a moving asset unpredictable, minimum monthly commitments per SIM, and overage pricing designed around the assumption you will not read the rate card. Look for flat, predictable pricing you can model across countries — Kilo's global IoT coverage starts at €10 — and confirm what happens to a SIM that sends almost nothing for a quarter, because a parked asset should not cost like an active one.
Five Questions for Any Global IoT SIM Provider
How many networks per country, and does the SIM steer to the strongest one? Is there an API for fleet operations, or only a web portal? Which eSIM/eUICC profiles are supported for over-the-air changes? Does security extend into the SIM (IoT SAFE) or stop at the APN? And can connectivity, device management, and the application platform come from one place?
